Trump Says Iran 'Stupidly' Violated the Ceasefire After Drone Attack in the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump accused Iran of a blatant violation of the ceasefire after a suicide drone struck a valuable cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz and three other drones were intercepted. He said the attack happened overnight between Thursday and Friday, and that it came just two days after an international effort began to evacuate stranded seafarers in the area.
In a post on his official Truth Social account, Trump said Tehran had sent at least four suicide drones toward civilian vessels crossing the strait. One of them penetrated the defenses and hit the upper deck of a large and expensive container cargo ship. Trump wrote, “Damage was caused to the area, but the ship was able to continue on its way.” He added that the other threats were dealt with quickly by joint security forces, saying, “We intercepted and shot down three other drones. It is clear that this is a stupid violation of our ceasefire agreement.”
The attack immediately disrupted international efforts to restore maritime traffic and commerce through the strategic waterway. The International Maritime Organization of the United Nations said it was suspending overnight escort and protection of civilian ships through the Strait of Hormuz after the strike was reported. That effectively froze efforts to reopen the shipping route.
The attack came only two days after an international operation began to evacuate sailors and crew members stranded on vessels in the strait because of earlier security tensions. The incident has heightened concern in the Middle East, where the strait is a vital route for global oil and energy traffic, and has raised expectations of a possible U.S. military response against Revolutionary Guard targets in the maritime area. The ceasefire in the Persian Gulf was reached after intensive talks between the Trump administration and Iran, under which Tehran had pledged to stop attacks on civilian ships and halt drone and missile strikes in the strait in return for certain concessions or political understandings from the West.
