Reports in China say light aircraft hit Beijing’s tallest skyscraper
A light aircraft reportedly crashed on Friday into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, according to social media reports in China. Video from the area showed aircraft debris falling around the CITIC Tower, the 108-story building in Beijing’s central business district.
Authorities closed roads around the skyscraper and kept bystanders from filming near the scene. CITIC Tower is the headquarters of CITIC Group, which is owned by the Chinese government. So far, Chinese authorities have not issued any official comment on the incident.
Reuters spoke with a passerby who said he heard the impact while in the area. “It was so loud, louder than fireworks,” he said. He added that he filmed a video showing part of the plane protruding from the building, but later deleted it because he feared being caught by police.
Another person told Reuters he came after seeing unverified images on social media showing aircraft remains on the road near the building. Social media posts about the building were quickly removed from Chinese platforms, and a search for the tower on Xiaohongshu returned only posts from Thursday.
