38-Story Manhattan Skyscraper Evacuated Over Structural Collapse Fears
A 38-story commercial skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan was evacuated on Tuesday due to serious structural concerns after support beams collapsed at a construction site within the building. Workers noticed two damaged support beams bending and failing on the 21st and 22nd floors, causing floors 21 through 26 to sink and bricks to fall from the structure. The building, undergoing conversion from office space to residential use, was an active construction site when the safety manager alerted the Department of Buildings about the hazard.
In response, fire and police authorities evacuated the skyscraper along with adjacent buildings, including a school and a hotel, as a precautionary measure. New York City’s mayor confirmed the structural issues and urged residents in the area to follow official instructions. Emergency crews closed off pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the site and launched an investigation with the Department of Buildings. All construction workers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the beam collapse remains under investigation.
