Klopp Slams Germany’s Shock Loss to Ecuador as a “Catastrophe”
Germany finished top of Group E and still secured a place in the World Cup round of 16, but their surprise 2-1 loss to Ecuador on Thursday in the final group match sparked sharp criticism at home and raised doubts before the knockout stage.
Speaking as a pundit on MagentaTV, former coach Jürgen Klopp did not hold back. He called the performance a “catastrophe” and said Germany had played the wrong way against an aggressive, highly motivated opponent. “From the 12th minute, we no longer had any depth, we played too deep and too many things did not work,” Klopp said. “Losing the ball is bad, but losing it in those areas is a catastrophe. Ecuador simply beat us in the battles in midfield.”
Asked whether the players lacked the right attitude, Klopp replied, “Of course. We have to combine our quality with an extraordinary mentality and increase the tempo. Ecuador played as if their lives depended on the game, and we at least have to match that level of intensity.” Mats Hummels also criticized Germany, calling the defeat a “warning sign” before the round of 16.
Hummels said Germany still has a squad capable of reaching the final, but warned that the display against Ecuador would not be enough in the decisive rounds. He said the team had lost the identity that had marked its earlier matches in the tournament. Coach Julian Nagelsmann rejected claims that his players lacked commitment, arguing that they could not be accused of not wanting it, only that Ecuador took more risks and was more efficient.
