Klopp Slams Germany After Shock Defeat to Ecuador
Germany still finished first in Group E and reached the World Cup round of 16, but the mood around the team turned sour after a surprising 2-1 loss to Ecuador in the final group-stage match. The defeat raised alarm bells in Germany just before the knockout rounds begin.
Two prominent figures in German football, former Liverpool manager and current Red Bull football chief Jürgen Klopp, and former defender and 2014 world champion Mats Hummels, offered unusually harsh criticism while working as pundits on Magenta TV’s World Cup studio show. Klopp said the team selected the wrong tools against an aggressive opponent and played the wrong kind of football.
Klopp added that from the 12th minute onward, Germany had no depth, defended in a low block as if practicing it, and did too many things badly. “It really did not leave the impression that we are going to stroll through the next stages,” he said. He also warned that losing the ball is bad, but losing it in the wrong areas is “a catastrophe,” adding that “they simply ate us alive in the duels in midfield.”
Asked whether the players lacked the right mentality, Klopp answered, “Of course.” He said Germany must maximize its quality with exceptional mentality and increase the tempo, stressing that Ecuador played with more emotion because it was fighting for survival in the tournament. Hummels agreed, calling the defeat an urgent warning to prevent an “disaster” in the round of 16, where Germany still does not know its opponent. Both said the squad has the potential to win the title, but only if it restores aggression, determination and intensity.
