A bride and groom who are both converts to Judaism are struggling to build a home as they prepare to marry in the coming days. The couple studies at Maorot HaTorah in Telz Stone, and after leaving behind their families and countries of origin to settle in Israel, they are now reportedly living in severe poverty with no personal property and no financial support.
According to the report, they have only the most basic needs for setting up a household, including a table and chairs, simple appliances such as a refrigerator and washing machine, kitchenware, and basic clothing for weekdays and Shabbat. They also face wedding expenses, even though the ceremony is planned in a very modest format, in a small hall with minimal refreshments.
Their financial distress was brought to the attention of Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein, who issued an unusual public appeal for help. In a recorded message, he said, “I am addressing my dear brothers, there is a male convert and a female convert from the Maorot HaTorah yeshiva in Telz Stone, they have nothing and need help.” He added that “the Holy One, blessed be He, will pay for this in full” and that the reward is “huge.”
Zilberstein also said that those who help are fulfilling two Torah commandments, loving the convert and loving the female convert, and ended with the blessing, “Your reward is up to the heavens.” Following his appeal, the Kupa HaIr charity opened a dedicated fundraising campaign and asked the public to donate 350 shekels to help the couple establish their home with dignity.
