Ben Gurion Airport Clears Fuel Tankers as Summer Travel Rush Builds

Over the past few days, fuel tanker aircraft that had been parked at Ben Gurion Airport have been moved out, after roughly four months on the ground. Officials say more planes still need to be cleared to make room for the summer travel surge and avoid delays or cancellations. According to reports, 74 tanker aircraft were stationed at Ben Gurion, and another 20 at Ramon Airport, effectively turning the airport grounds into a de facto American air base.

The tankers had occupied many parking stands normally used by civilian aircraft, raising concern that the airport would not have enough space during its busiest season. The removals have now begun, with planes transferred to other airports in the region, including Qatar and other Gulf states. Airport authorities are still asking the Americans to move additional aircraft so the field can return to its main role, regular passenger takeoffs and landings.

The Israel Airports Authority said Thursday will be the busiest day at Ben Gurion since March, with more than 75,000 passengers expected on incoming and outgoing international flights. In July, more than 2 million passengers are projected to pass through the airport, about 25% more than in the same period last year.

Transportation Minister Miri Regev said, “We acted and continue to act to keep the skies open ahead of summer and meet the growing demand for flights from Israel and to Israel,” adding that the preparations include intensive work with all relevant parties and the removal of part of the American aircraft from Ben Gurion. Airports Authority chairman Yiftach Ron-Tal said the figures reflect “the strengthening of aviation activity in Israel” and renewed confidence from the public and foreign airlines.

As part of the summer preparations, Terminal 1 will reopen on June 28, 2026 for domestic flights, and on July 1, 2026 for international flights. The Airports Authority is advising passengers to check in in advance, confirm their departure terminal, arrive three hours before takeoff, and verify flight times with their airline.
