U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday on his social media platform that Washington had received an official message from Tehran saying Iran is not charging transit fees, insurance payments, or any other tolls from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He attacked conflicting reports about Iran’s behavior there, calling them “fake news.”
Trump said that if the information Iran provided turns out to be false, the United States will stop negotiations immediately. He also stressed that the U.S. has not sent money to Iran and has not released any previously frozen Iranian funds to the regime.
At the same time, Trump said some Iranian money under U.S. control will be used to buy food and agricultural goods for people in Iran, including corn, wheat, and soybeans. He said those purchases will be made exclusively from American suppliers.
