Dr. Shira Baram, a senior fertility and IVF specialist at Emek Medical Center, died suddenly after a medical emergency. She was 47. She was taken in serious condition to the hospital in Afula, where she had worked for many years, but doctors were unable to save her.
The hospital and colleagues described Baram as a dedicated, professional and humane physician who spent her career helping women and couples overcome fertility struggles and realize their dream of parenthood. Many patients remembered her not only for her medical expertise, but also for the hope, attentive listening and sense of security she gave them during a difficult and emotional process. Some women who came to her after years of trying to conceive said she guided them from the first medical evaluation all the way to building a family.
Baram began working at Emek Medical Center in 2006 after graduating in medicine from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She later specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, and completed a subspecialty in reproductive endocrinology and fertility disorders in Toronto, Canada. After returning to Israel, she joined the hospital’s IVF unit in the women’s and maternity division and treated patients from northern Israel and across the country.
Alongside her clinical work, Baram also conducted medical research and trained medical students and residents. She published professional papers in fertility medicine and belonged to professional associations in Israel and abroad. Her death prompted public tributes from patients, doctors and medical staff, who called her an exceptional professional and a person of rare sensitivity.
