Dr. Shira Baram, one of Israel’s leading fertility and IVF doctors, died after a sudden cardiac event at her home in Kfar Yehezkel moshav. She was 47. Hours earlier, she had marked 21 years of marriage with her husband, Ori Baram. After she felt unwell, rescue teams were called, resuscitation was attempted, and she was evacuated in critical condition to Emek Medical Center in Afula, where doctors fought for her life for hours.
Ori Baram said that just a few hours before the medical emergency, the couple had been celebrating their anniversary over a shared meal. Recalling her final moments, he said: “She told me she wasn’t feeling well and said, ‘Something bad is happening to me.’” According to him, MDA teams and other medical personnel performed CPR at the scene before she was taken to the hospital in extremely serious condition.
Emek Medical Center paid tribute to her, saying she devoted her professional life to treating women and accompanying families during some of the most important moments of their lives. The hospital described her as “a dedicated, professional and beloved doctor” who left a deep mark on colleagues and many patients.
Baram began working at Emek Medical Center in 2006 after completing her medical degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She later specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, and completed advanced training in reproductive endocrinology and fertility disorders in Toronto, Canada. After returning to Israel, she joined the IVF unit in the women’s and maternity department. Alongside her hospital work, she also practiced at Clalit’s women’s health center in Beit She’an, taught and trained future doctors, published professional research, and belonged to medical associations in Israel and abroad. Her death shocked colleagues and patients, who posted hundreds of tributes online describing her as humane, sensitive and highly professional.
