The Satmar Rebbe made a 36-hour visit to Montreal, Canada, drawing intense excitement across the city’s Jewish and Hasidic community. The trip marked the completion of the purchase of the Satmar community’s new Talmud Torah building in the city, called Naishtadt, and the Rebbe traveled to and from Canada on specially chartered private planes to maximize every hour of the visit.
During the packed itinerary, he encouraged community members of all ages and reviewed the progress of the community’s institutions. He attended Torah and religious gatherings in local Talmud Torahs, yeshivas and kollels, and also visited wealthy supporters’ homes to raise the funds still needed to finish the purchase of the new school building.
The Rebbe also presided over several major events, including a Homesh Seudah ceremony for preschool children and the celebration of a completed tractate of Shabbat, studied by the Hasidim through the daily program Torasecha Shaashuai. He also paid a notable visit to nearby Kiryas Tosh, where he went to the home of the Tosh Rebbe. The two rabbis spoke at length about Torah and current affairs.
Later, the Satmar Rebbe addressed Satmar followers from Kiryas Tosh at a gathering held in the home of community activist Mordechai Weider. He also held an extended session with rabbis and judges from the city’s Haredi communities, discussing Torah and halachic matters in depth. As he left for the airport, Montreal community members accompanied him emotionally, saying the short visit left a lasting spiritual impression.
