Prices for many vegetables and fruits have fallen sharply in major retail chains in Israel, dropping to just 1.9 to 2.9 shekels per kilogram. Items that had recently been much more expensive are now selling at near-floor prices.
The price drop comes despite a plant virus that destroyed about 10% of the growing area at the start of the season. The market is now flooded with local produce that is not being sent for export, because foreign exchange rates have fallen and international hostility toward Israel has increased.
Examples cited include watermelon, which began the season at 9 shekels per kilogram and is now selling for 2 shekels. White cabbage is priced at 1.9 shekels per kilogram, while cucumbers and tomatoes cost 2.9 shekels per kilogram. Beetroot, carrots, zucchini and red peppers are also being sold for 2.9 shekels per kilogram.
