Buying an iPhone overseas may look cheaper, but the price gap can hide major differences between models sold in different countries. Mivzakim and other reporting cited in Maariv says the differences can involve SIM design, eSIM support, cellular bands, carrier locking, region-based software limits, and warranty terms. The advice is to check the exact model number before buying and not to rely on claims that it is an “international version.”
One of the biggest differences is whether the phone has a physical SIM tray. In the United States, the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 were sold without a SIM slot, and the move later expanded to more countries with the iPhone 17. Those models work only with eSIM. They can function in Israel, but only if the phone is unlocked and the local carrier supports eSIM activation for the line being used. People who want to move a physical SIM card between phones, or who use a work line that does not support eSIM, may find such a device unsuitable.
In many European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Britain, the models are usually closer to the Israeli setup, with support for both nano-SIM and eSIM. In China, some models come with two physical SIM slots but do not normally support eSIM. Another critical check is carrier lock. In countries such as the United States, many phones are sold through mobile companies under contracts or installment plans and may be locked to a local network, so inserting an Israeli SIM will not solve the problem. On a phone that has already been activated, the setting path is General, About, and the Carrier Lock line, where the desired message is “No SIM restrictions.”
For used devices, buyers also need to make sure there is no prior Apple ID activation lock, no enterprise management profile, and no blocked IMEI tied to a report that the phone was stolen, lost, or still financed. Warranty also needs checking. Apple’s limited warranty lasts one year, but service can be limited to the country where the phone was sold, and Israeli importer warranty does not apply to an iPhone bought abroad. The recommendation is to verify the model number on Apple’s website, confirm support for Israeli network bands, make sure the device is unlocked, keep the original receipt, and activate the phone in the store. The savings may be significant, but a locked or incompatible phone can become an expensive headache.
