Manchester United announced on Monday that it has secured ownership of the land needed for a new Old Trafford stadium, a major step in the club’s redevelopment plan launched last year. The project centers on replacing the current home ground with a stadium of at least 100,000 seats while also transforming the surrounding area into a major development hub.
The land acquired is about 25 dunams and sits less than half a kilometer from the existing stadium. United said it will now begin preparations and talks with shops and companies that may rent space around the new venue.
In its official statement, the club said the regeneration plan is expected to create 15,000 new homes and 48,000 new jobs. United estimated the wider project will inject about $7 billion into the British economy.
The club hopes the new stadium will be ready for use starting in the 2030/31 season. Until then, Old Trafford is expected to remain in use for only a few more years.
