A new report from WABetaInfo says WhatsApp users may be able to check whether they have been blocked without sending a message. The method, described on Monday, is based on WhatsApp’s automatic encryption verification system, which launched in 2023 and is meant to confirm end-to-end security without manually comparing codes.
Until now, users mostly relied on weak signs such as a missing profile photo, a single gray check mark, or unanswered calls. Those clues can also result from stricter privacy settings or a device change, so they are not conclusive. According to the report, the encryption check is a more discreet and reliable way to test whether a contact has blocked you.
To use it, open the chat with the suspected contact, tap their name at the top to reach the info screen, and choose the “Encryption” option. In a normal case, WhatsApp verifies the connection automatically within seconds and shows a green check mark indicating encryption is working. If you have been blocked, the app reportedly says verification failed and asks you to scan a QR code manually, which is a sign the link between the accounts has been broken.
The main advantage is privacy, because the check is done locally on your device and does not leave a trace. Unlike sending a message to see whether blue ticks appear, the other person will not know you checked. WhatsApp has not officially confirmed this use of the feature, but user tests cited in the report suggest it works consistently on both Android and iOS.
