A short video posted on X, formerly Twitter, set off a heated debate after it showed a small dog sitting comfortably on the fold-down meal tray of an airplane seat, facing the window. The dog appeared calm, but many viewers reacted angrily because the tray is meant for eating.
The user who shared the clip said, “You know I love dogs, but this is completely unacceptable. Dogs are supposed to stay in a carrier for the entire flight. That is just not right. Disgusting. Don’t forget to bring wipes and clean your tray tables.” He also asked whether people would confront the dog’s owner directly or let the flight crew handle it.
Commenters split over the scene. Some said small children are also sometimes placed on those trays during flights, while others argued that the dog had crossed a clear line. One wrote, “People just won’t believe it.” Another said, “I love dogs, but an airplane meal tray is not a dog bed. Airline rules exist for a reason. You should let the crew deal with it.” A third joked that at least the owner seemed to have no room left on their lap.
According to standard airline policy, small dogs are generally required to stay in a carrier stored under the seat in front of their owner, while larger dogs usually travel in a temperature-controlled cargo hold. The main exception is trained service dogs, which may sit next to their owners, on their laps, or on the floor. In this case, it was not clear whether the dog was a service animal or how the crew responded.
