WhatsApp is testing a green dot on profile photos to show when a contact is online, according to WABetaInfo. The feature was spotted in Android beta version 2.26.24.5 and is currently limited to the chat info screen, where it replaces the existing “Online” status, or “מחובר” in Hebrew. It will only appear when the contact’s privacy settings allow their online status to be seen, and users can still hide their availability in privacy settings.
The new indicator is not yet available in the main chat list, though WABetaInfo expects that it may expand there later. The outlet has also reported previously on a planned contacts area that would show people who are online now or recently active, with sorting by name or connection status. Contacts who hide their status would not appear in that list. For now, the green dot is being rolled out gradually to a limited number of Android beta testers.
WhatsApp is also working on a separate Android backup management area, away from Google Drive. The feature would let users view existing backups, delete old or duplicate ones, and free up storage. It is also expected to include shortcuts for managing Google Drive storage through a browser and for handling WhatsApp backups from Android device settings.
On Android, WhatsApp currently stores chats and media in Google Drive, and those backups count toward Google account storage. Users can back up manually or automatically on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, and restore data after reinstalling the app with the same phone number and Google account. WABetaInfo says WhatsApp may offer its own internal backup option with only 2GB for free, plus an upgrade to 50GB for $1 a month. Backups on WhatsApp servers would be end-to-end encrypted by default, with options to protect them using a passkey, a regular password, or a 64-digit key. The backup manager is still in development and is not yet available for beta testing.
