Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos announced on Instagram that Zeljko Obradovic is returning to the Greek club, 14 years after leaving it. Giannakopoulos posted a photo with the Serbian coach and wrote, "The king is coming home." The report says the deal is for three years and is worth a total of 10.5 million euros, or 3.5 million euros per season.
Obradovic, 66, left Partizan Belgrade in December after four years in charge and is now headed back to the team where he enjoyed his greatest success as a coach. He first arrived at Panathinaikos in the summer of 1999 and spent 13 years there.
During that spell, he led Panathinaikos to 11 Greek league titles, seven Greek cups and five EuroLeague, or European Champions Cup, crowns. Afterward, he moved to Fenerbahce, where he coached for seven years, winning four Turkish championships and one more EuroLeague title.
Overall, Obradovic is credited with nine European Champions Cup titles, including trophies won with Partizan, Joventut Badalona and Real Madrid. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in European basketball.
