A Brazilian chicken breed nicknamed the “Indian giant” has gone viral for being the tallest rooster in the world, with some birds standing more than one meter high. The breed was developed in Brazil in the late 1980s through deliberate crossbreeding of Asian fighting roosters with local chickens.
To qualify as a true giant, a male must reach at least 1.05 meters in height and weigh no less than 4.5 kilograms. Females are also unusually large, at about 90 centimeters tall. Social media users have given the bird playful labels such as “the rooster that forgot how to be a rooster,” a reference to its long legs and unusual appearance.
Despite its intimidating size, breeders say the animal is curious, active, and generally friendly and easy to handle. It is also a strong layer, producing up to 250 large eggs a year.
The main drawback is climate: the breed is highly sensitive to cold and needs warm weather to survive, similar to conditions in its Brazilian homeland.
