Police in Scotland arrested a 36-year-old man over the weekend after a string of violent attacks targeting Muslims and vandalism across Edinburgh. At least five people were injured to varying degrees. British officials, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the early findings point to a hate crime.
According to official reports, the incident began on Friday evening when the suspect, a local resident whose identity has not yet been released, walked through the capital carrying a long blunt object. As he moved through the city, he attacked businesses, smashed car windows, damaged a gas station and assaulted bystanders who came into his path.
Emergency calls first reached dispatchers around 8:50 p.m. Police launched a pursuit and brought the suspect under control about 40 minutes later, at 9:30 p.m. Media footage from the scene showed officers pinning him to the ground as he shouted, “I am defending the country.”
The five injured victims, Muslim men aged 22 to 39, were taken to local hospitals for treatment. A preliminary charge was filed against the suspect. UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the attack as “serious and shocking,” saying there is no place for violence and hate in society and that the incident does not reflect the country’s values.
