A French court has rejected the appeal of Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi and ruled that he must stand trial on rape charges. The 27-year-old denies the allegations and said on X that he is “looking forward” to the proceedings, adding, “Sometimes I feel like I have become an easy target. I have been waiting for this trial from day one. And now I am looking forward to it. Finally I will be able to speak.”
The case centers on an alleged incident on February 25, 2023, after Hakimi invited a 24-year-old woman to his home in Boulogne-Billancourt following messages exchanged on Instagram. According to her police testimony, he kissed her against her will, touched her body without consent, and then forced himself on her sexually until she managed to push him away and leave the apartment distressed.
Hakimi is the captain of Morocco, which is currently playing in the World Cup in North America. As of now, he will remain with the national team, which is due to play Scotland on Friday night and later Haiti. Morocco opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Brazil.
