Lebanese Political Figure Says Iran Intervened to Back Hezbollah
The Iranian strikes in response to the Israeli operation in the Dahieh were carried out in an attempt to support Hezbollah, in the face of the terror group’s “weakness” in Lebanon, and to regain control over decision-making in Beirut, a political figure in the country from the camp opposed to the terror group said Monday evening.
According to him, “We must not allow the equation that Iran is trying to create.” The figure expressed concern about the United States’ stance on the Middle East, and claimed that linking the Lebanese arena to the Iranian arena in any agreement between Washington and Tehran would restore the Revolutionary Guards’ control over the fate of the Lebanese people.
At the same time, the Lebanese leadership, which is opposed to Iran and Hezbollah, has still not thanked the Revolutionary Guards for the “outstretched hand.”
Gunfire exchanges took place over the past 24 hours between Iran and Israel following an Israeli strike in the Dahieh in Beirut, until both sides announced a ceasefire.
From the Revolutionary Guards’ emergency headquarters it was said: “We announce the suspension of the armed forces’ operations, but if the aggression and wickedness continue, including in southern Lebanon, much harsher and more crushing measures will be on the way.” According to them, “The firing at Israel was in response to the Israeli strike in the Dahieh.”
Hours after the announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement to the public. Netanyahu referred to threats from Tehran that they would resume fire if Israel attacked in Lebanon, and said, “Over the past day Iran and Hezbollah tried to impose a new equation on us, it is intolerable and unacceptable to me.”
Also on the subject, the cabinet convened, assessment: the ceasefire depends only on the campaign in Lebanon. Studies will resume: the IDF lifted the restrictions, except for the confrontation line.
