Elia Avdush, the eldest son of Gal and Nagy Avdush, who were murdered in the Nova music festival massacre on October 7, celebrated his bar mitzvah on Thursday. The event was organized by the One Family association and held with his relatives, friends, and the group’s supporters around him.
The ceremony was described as especially sensitive, blending the joy of the milestone with grief and longing for his parents. For the family and those accompanying him, it was also a reminder that even after bereavement and pain, life continues, children grow up, and hope can be rebuilt.
Shantel Belzberg, active vice chair of the association, said, “Elia’s journey is a testament to strength, courage and the choice of life. He is inspiring not only because of what he went through, but because of who he is. We are all so proud of him and wish him to keep growing, believing in himself and fulfilling every dream that comes his way.”
Elad Danon, a psychotherapist and coordinator, added that he is “much more than a boy celebrating his bar mitzvah today,” saying she had accompanied him through “pain, coping and growth” and seen how, from “the greatest loss,” he repeatedly chooses life. She said the bar mitzvah was not only a coming-of-age marker, but also proof of the love his parents left him, the family supporting him, the community walking beside him, and a teenager growing out of trauma without letting it define him.
