Court Orders Immediate Release of Minor Arrested on Suspicion of Assaulting Police Officer
A court ordered the unconditional release of a minor arrested on suspicion of harming and assaulting a police officer in Givat Tel Talpiyot, after ruling that there was no significant evidence against the suspect and that he was not connected to the assault incident at all. The court ordered the release of the minor, who had been arrested on suspicion of harming and assaulting a police officer in Givat Tel Talpiyot.
The minor was taken to the police station over the past weekend and held in custody overnight behind bars. At a hearing on his case, police asked the judge to extend the boy’s detention by another five days. Attorney Nati Rom, who represents the minor on behalf of the Honenu organization, proved during the hearing that the minor did not assault the officer as alleged, and that he had in fact been arrested while on his way to the hill.
Following this, the court rejected the police request and ordered the minor released immediately and without any restrictive conditions. In the formal ruling, the judge wrote: "There is no significant evidence against the suspect and he is not connected at all to the assault incident."
After the release decision, Rom said: "Again and again we encounter wrongful arrests of minors from the settlement movement with no criminal record. In this case, once again the police told the court that the boy assaulted police officers and interfered with them, and when the officer was asked a few questions it turned out that there really was no assault there and there is no indication of an assault, and that the minor was arrested in fact on his way to the farm where he lives. This phenomenon is improper and must stop."
