Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and SpearUAV announced a strategic partnership to strengthen the protection of maneuvering forces against aerial threats, especially drones and loitering munitions. The companies said they will develop a new interceptor called Iron Wasp, designed to be mounted on armored vehicles and to intercept threats while moving.
According to the companies, Iron Wasp is based on SpearUAV’s Viper technology and is intended to give troops a fast, ready-to-use and simple response to aerial threats without advance preparation or complex systems. Rafael said the interceptor adds another layer to its multilayered defense concept by combining detection, identification and interception in one system.
The compact system is launched from a small multi-barrel launcher mounted directly on the vehicle, can engage fast and low-signature targets, and consumes relatively few resources. It is meant to integrate with existing systems without adding operational complexity, and to provide immediate launch capability while on the move.
Rafael said the cooperation expands its defense portfolio, which already includes Trophy, Drone Dome, SAMSON and laser systems, and broadens its offerings for customers worldwide. Zvi Marmur, Rafael’s senior vice president and head of the land and naval systems division, said, “Iron Wasp reflects this innovation and adds an organic aerial interception capability needed by our customers.” Yiftach Kleinman, CEO of SpearUAV, said Rafael’s choice of his company after a comprehensive evaluation was “a significant vote of confidence” and that the partnership supports its “Organic Air Force” vision for maneuvering forces.
