The United States and Iran, with mediators, are discussing whether to sign their memorandum of understanding electronically as soon as today, according to a Wednesday report on the American site Axios. The report says the two sides are also considering bringing the deal into force earlier than planned, possibly overnight instead of on Friday.
Even if an early electronic signing is arranged, it would not replace the already scheduled meeting between the US and Iranian negotiating teams on Friday in Switzerland. The Axios report said the move could also allow the Strait of Hormuz to open earlier than expected and make the contents of the understanding public.
Earlier this week, a senior US administration official said the memorandum ending the war between Iran and the United States had already been signed by President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf. On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the ceasefire agreement with the US had already taken effect from the moment it was announced earlier in the week.
