U.S. President Donald Trump held a press conference on Wednesday evening against the backdrop of negotiations over an agreement with Iran. Before speaking, Trump said Iran had been “militarily defeated in the first week of the war” and added, “I want Israel to be able to defend itself, but it must use good judgment.”
Speaking as he attended the G7 summit in France, Trump repeated his main principles: Iran will not get a nuclear weapon, and the Strait of Hormuz must be opened immediately to shipping. He said the memorandum of understanding reached with Iran is not final and that the United States could strike in Iran again “if necessary.”
Earlier in the day, Mike Pence, Trump’s vice president during his first term, criticized the emerging deal, saying it “smells of appeasement.” In an interview with CNN, Pence argued that the outline suggests Washington would give Tehran sweeping financial benefits without receiving commitments to stop supporting terrorism or to meet nuclear conditions.
Pence also said it would be a mistake to ease sanctions and unfreeze funds before Iran implements the agreement. He urged Trump to “show toughness,” keep the blockade in place, and consider returning to military action if Iran does not prove it is complying.
