Hundreds gathered Monday night in Beitar Illit for a ceremonial הכנסת ספר תורה, a Torah scroll dedication held in memory of Haredi soldier Capt. Uriel Peretz, who was killed in Gaza. The event honored his soul and drew a large community turnout for what organizers described as a deeply emotional tribute.
Peretz was a resident of Beitar Illit who grew up and studied there before enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces, where he served as a fighter in the Kfir Brigade. He was killed in combat during the ground offensive in the Gaza Strip in Chanukah two and a half years ago. He was 22 when he fell, and after his death he was promoted from sergeant major to sergeant.
His family said the dedication fulfilled a long-held dream to commemorate him in a meaningful spiritual and moral way. They spent months preparing the project, which culminated in a carefully produced and festive ceremony that reflected the effort they invested and their desire to continue his legacy.
Peretz left behind his parents, Hanania and Esther, and his siblings Michael, Hodaya and Rivka. The Torah scroll dedicated in his name will now serve the local community as a living memorial connecting his life story, courage and values.
