Real Madrid has announced its second signing of the summer, bringing in Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva on a two-year contract after his Manchester City deal expired. Spanish reports say the agreement also includes an option for a third season. The 31-year-old, who spent almost a decade at City, will join the Spanish capital club after being a target for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as well.
According to the reports, Silva made Real Madrid his clear priority once the offer arrived from Los Blancos and ended talks with the other clubs. He was reportedly at the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list after the Portuguese coach was formally named Real Madrid manager last week. Silva will now wear white next season, following Madrid’s earlier signing of Spain defender Marc Cucurella earlier this week.
The club is also expected soon to confirm the arrivals of Denzel Dumfries from Inter and Ibrahima Konate, who has finished his contract with Liverpool. Silva began his professional career in Benfica’s youth system, went on loan to Monaco after making his senior debut in 2014, and was then bought by Monaco for nearly 16 million euros.
He moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for 50 million euros. In nearly 10 years there, he made 460 appearances, scored 76 goals and assisted 77 more. With City he won the Champions League, the Club World Cup, five League Cups, three FA Cups and six Premier League titles.
