Two More Survivors Pulled From Nepal Flood Debris After 10 Days

Nepalese rescuers have found two more survivors, a Chinese national and a local woman, who were trapped for 10 days following a devastating flood and landslide in Nepal on August 26. The Chinese worker, Lu Haitao, was rescued from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Project. The complex rescue operation involved Nepalese military personnel and South Korean specialists working in the unstable, partially flooded tunnel. Lu Haitao was found approximately 225 meters from the tunnel entrance and airlifted to a hospital, where his condition is reported as stable.

Separately, 64-year-old Chandrika Shrestha was found alive in Betrawati, Nuwakot district, after her four-story home was buried by a mudslide. Only the roof of her house remained visible. She was discovered by chance while debris was being cleared. Earlier, on September 4, two Nepalese workers, Sanjay Saha and Kabir Maharjan, were found alive after spending nine days trapped in a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A power station.

The disaster occurred on August 26 in the Trishuli River valley when a high-altitude glacier collapsed, damming the river. The subsequent breach of the natural dam unleashed a massive torrent of water, mud, ice, and rocks, destroying villages, roads, and bridges. Over 1,300 people have died, and more than 5,000 are missing, including two Israelis. Several hydroelectric power stations were severely damaged, trapping an estimated 900 workers, with around 500 believed to be inside tunnels.
