Budapest Jewish Festival Proceeds Amid Disrupted Protest Attempt

The annual Cholent Festival, celebrating its tenth anniversary as part of the Week of Synagogues and Jewish Culture Festival, took place in central Budapest in late August 2026 without incident. However, the event's smooth operation was nearly compromised by a planned pro-Palestinian demonstration. Local rapper and activist Geras (Gergely Komáromi) attempted to organize a protest titled "Together for Justice, From Palestine to Budapest" directly at the festival's entrance in a park near City Hall.

Members of the local Jewish community viewed the chosen location as a deliberate provocation, escalating criticism of Israel into hostility towards Hungarian Jews. Chief Rabbi Shlomo Koves of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary highlighted the danger of such initiatives, stating that Geras was "testing the limits of what is permissible in Hungary regarding the safety of Jews living here."

Following community intervention and public outcry, city authorities, led by Mayor Gergely Karácsony, ordered the demonstration to be moved away from the festival grounds. The EMIH organization, which hosted the anniversary festival, ensured open access for all attendees to concerts and cultural events.

Chief Rabbi Koves commented on the limited appeal of radical actions in Hungary, asserting that "Hungarian society itself rejects such people. It does not share such extremist views." He added that the community would continue to hold its events openly, emphasizing that Hungary remains the safest country in Europe for Jews.
