Yeshiva Stands By Students Involved in Givati Brigade Incident
The Hesder Yeshiva of Beit She'an has issued a statement supporting its students serving as combat soldiers in the Givati Brigade, who are reportedly involved in a recent incident that has garnered public attention. The yeshiva affirmed its commitment to its students, stating, "The yeshiva stands behind its students, strengthens them, accompanies them closely, and insists that they will not be punished at all."
In a message to alumni, parents, and friends, the yeshiva emphasized its deep understanding of the students' dedication to military service and their adherence to Halakha (Jewish law). "We are well aware of their great devotion to military service, their willingness to bear the burden and fight for the people of Israel, and equally, their deep commitment to the Torah, to Halakha, and to the path they were educated on," the statement read.
According to the yeshiva, the students were in contact with the Rosh Yeshiva (head of the yeshiva) on the night of the incident to seek guidance on how to proceed. This consultation occurred due to the unavailability of the brigade rabbi at the time and a perceived "crisis of confidence" stemming from previous issues related to Halakhic matters. Since the incident, the yeshiva has been actively engaged with military, public, and political officials to support the students and ensure the matter is handled fairly.
The yeshiva views the situation as both educational and principled, stressing that their students are sent to serve with a deep belief in protecting the Jewish people and full partnership in Israel's national missions. Simultaneously, they are taught to uphold Torah and mitzvot (commandments) during their service. The yeshiva believes that meaningful military service and adherence to Halakha are complementary values, fostering a generation committed to both the Jewish people and the Torah.
Recognizing the importance of maintaining Halakha within the military, especially during challenging times, the yeshiva highlighted the need to reinforce adherence to Jewish law, preserve the sanctity of the camp, and allow observant soldiers to perform their duties without compromising their way of life. The yeshiva expressed pride in their students' sense of responsibility and seriousness, even in difficult moments, and their commitment to seeking religious counsel. The yeshiva's rabbis and students gathered outside the prison the previous evening to offer support and encouragement to the soldiers, vowing to continue accompanying them and fostering students who integrate Torah, responsibility, service, and devotion to Israel.
