President Herzog Inaugurates Rabbi Amitai Center at Har Etzion Yeshiva

President Isaac Herzog attended the inauguration ceremony for the Rabbi Yehuda Amitai Center at the Har Etzion Hesder Yeshiva in Alon Shvut. The center aims to bridge the gap between Torah scholarship and pressing issues within Israeli society. The event drew rabbis, Knesset members, and public figures who called for unity and moral responsibility.

The new center is established in memory of Rabbi Yehuda Amitai, a co-founder of the yeshiva who led it for approximately four decades. During his visit, President Herzog met with yeshiva leaders, including Rabbi Yaakov Medan, Rabbi Baruch Gigi, and Rabbi Moshe Lichtenstein, to learn about the center's planned activities. Attendees at the ceremony included Knesset members Moshe Solomon and Moshe Kinley Tur-Paz, Gush Etzion Regional Council head Yaron Rosenthal, and members of Rabbi Amitai's family.

In his address, President Herzog emphasized the importance of Torah study in uniting the nation, particularly during election periods when societal divisions intensify. He urged attendees to remember Rabbi Amitai's legacy of promoting peace and his love for the Jewish people, the land, and Torah, stating that unity is essential for the future of the nation. "Only in the unity of Israel will we complete the task! Only in the unity of Israel is there a future for the building of the people, the land, and the Torah!"

The head of the center, Rabbi Beni Lehman, spoke about the generation's spiritual mission and the responsibility to uphold Zionism alongside the Jewish people's spiritual destiny. He cautioned against prioritizing one value to the exclusion of others, asserting that "improper means can defile the goal."

Rabbi Baruch Gigi, head of the yeshiva, highlighted the institution's 60-year history of engaging with public life in various fields, including education, law, and industry. He described the new center as an extension of the yeshiva's outreach.

The Rabbi Amitai Center will focus on discussions regarding Jewish identity, religion-state relations, national unity, and the challenges facing Israel, guided by the principles of Rabbi Amitai and Rabbi Lichtenstein. Rabbi Amitai, a Holocaust survivor, was a key figure in establishing the Meimad party and briefly served as a minister after the Rabin assassination.
