A panel of Brazil's Supreme Court voted on Tuesday to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, for trying to enlist U.S. intervention in the legal case against his father over an alleged coup attempt. All four judges on the panel supported the conviction. Later in the day, they are expected to decide what punishment he will face.
According to the indictment filed by Brazil's attorney general, Eduardo Bolsonaro worked with contacts in the United States to help his father by pushing sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Court judges and tariffs on Brazilian goods. Reuters reported that both the sanctions and the tariffs were later reduced.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former member of parliament, moved to the United States in 2025, months before his father was convicted in a separate case of conspiring to carry out a coup. While in the United States, he sought to build support for his father, especially among figures in Donald Trump's administration.
After the verdict, Eduardo Bolsonaro said in a statement that he had not received proper notice of the case against him. In an earlier interview with Reuters, he said his U.S. activity was not aimed at getting his father acquitted in Brazilian courts, but at pressuring Brazil's Supreme Court to act against people he said were not following the country's constitution.
