Rabbis Ask Trump to Intervene in IDF Draft, Discuss US Jewish Issues

A delegation of Hasidic rebbes and yeshiva deans met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, raising several key issues including the controversial Israeli military draft of yeshiva students. According to Orthodox commentator Yisrael Cohen, the rabbis requested Trump's influence on the draft issue in Israel, alongside matters concerning American Jewry.

Discussions also covered attempts to interfere with the Orthodox education system in New York, rising antisemitism, and the welfare of Jewish and Orthodox prisoners in U.S. facilities, including religious conditions. Cohen highlighted the unprecedented honor shown to the religious leaders by the President, noting such a meeting would be highly criticized if held by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Gadi Eisenkot.

The meeting also had an internal U.S. political dimension, with Congressman Mike Lawler, who is seeking to run in a district with significant Hasidic electoral power, attending. Jared Kushner also joined part of the meeting.

However, the most significant event within the Orthodox community was the reconciliation of the two Satmar rebbes, brothers who had not spoken in 25 years. Cohen stated that President Trump was instrumental in bringing them together, making their handshake the highlight of the historic visit, as documented by journalist Moshe Weissberg.
