Israel Launches National AI Education Plan Amid Teacher Shortage Concerns

Israel's Ministry of Education has launched a national program to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its school system, aiming to position the country as a global leader in the field. Education Minister Yoav Kisch has declared the current academic year as one of "next revolution" for education, envisioning a future where AI transforms the traditional classroom.

The initiative, building on a pilot program from last year, will expand to approximately 140 educational institutions this year. Students in grades 9 through 12 will receive specialized training in AI, with the technology already being incorporated into various learning subjects.

This ambitious plan, backed by an initial investment of 140 million shekels, seeks to address significant challenges within the education system, most notably the shortage of thousands of teachers. Officials hope AI can help mitigate this deficit and improve educational outcomes.

However, the rapid adoption of AI in classrooms raises questions. While the ministry is pushing forward with its vision, the program is currently in its pilot phase. Past experiences with technology in education have shown mixed results, with some studies highlighting potential harms and leading other countries to restrict technology like smartphones in classrooms.
