Israel Sprays Chemicals at Sea to Combat Algae Bloom, Sparks Health Concerns
Israel's Water Authority conducted an experimental spraying of chemicals off the coast of Ashkelon yesterday to combat a harmful algae bloom threatening desalination facilities. The operation, carried out by a "Chem-Nir" company plane, covered a 9-kilometer stretch about a kilometer offshore. Chemicals used included copper sulfate at concentrations up to 27 times the standard, along with Aluminium Sulphate and Sodium Percarbonate.
The Ministry of Health has recommended prohibiting fishing in the treated area and an additional kilometer buffer zone. This recommendation stems from the unpredictable water currents and insufficient information about the algae strains, some of which may be toxic and harmful to humans. The Ministry suggests maintaining the fishing ban until tissue monitoring confirms chemical levels have returned to background levels, noting that standard bathing water tests do not cover these specific chemical contaminants.
Despite the Ministry of Health's concerns, the Ministry of Energy and the Water Authority assert there is no danger to the public. They state the chemicals used are approved for drinking water and pose no risk to public health or the marine environment. A committee including Health Ministry representatives approved the substances to help restore desalination plants to full operation.
Satellite imagery indicates the algae bloom in the Mediterranean has not significantly diminished and may spread north towards Haifa, potentially impacting the Hadera desalination plant. However, the Ministry of Energy and Water Authority maintain that water supply remains normal, with the Sorek A desalination plant already back online. Increased production, along with water from drilling and the Sea of Galilee, ensures continuous supply for households and agriculture.
