Maor Sweitzer: From Teen Idol to Acclaimed Actor, a Life of Challenges

Israeli actor Maor Sweitzer is celebrating his 37th birthday, marking a significant career transition from a prominent teen star to a respected figure in Israeli dramas and films. Born and raised in Jerusalem, Sweitzer's upbringing in the city during the Second Intifada profoundly influenced his later work, including his role in the series "Red Skies."

Sweitzer faced considerable challenges in his youth, including attention and concentration difficulties and struggles with reading and writing, which made school a difficult experience. He recalled feeling inadequate at 18 until his mother highlighted his talent for connecting with people. He was medically discharged from the IDF due to blindness in his left eye and leg issues, ironically later portraying a squadron commander in the film "Air Combat."

He also battled obesity, weighing 107 kilograms until age 18. The desire to avoid typecasting motivated him to lose weight as he began acting studies. Sweitzer stumbled into acting, initially pursuing it as a hobby for three years at the "HaDerech" acting school before his first TV role in "2.3 a Week" in 2011.

Early breakthroughs included roles in the teen series "Galiss" and "Hatzuaya," and the Israeli "Euphoria," which inspired the American version. His short film "Resen" screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2016, Sweitzer opened a bar-restaurant in the Philippines with a friend, stepping away from the industry for about a year. His return to Israel was prompted by his partner's death in an accident, a traumatic event that led to significant life changes.

Sweitzer has openly discussed his 13-year struggle with drug addiction, which began at age 14 and continued even during his career's peak, involving substantial financial investment. A mental health crisis following his friend's death led him to seek help and undergo rehabilitation. He now shares his recovery story. He met his wife, Niv Sultan, on the set of "She Has It," and they married in March 2022, welcoming their son, Neta, in 2025. They later played a couple in the film "Good Boys 2."
