IDF Colonel Promoted After Fighting Terrorists on October 7

Aluf-Mishne (Colonel) Guy Madar, a father of five and resident of Karmei Katif, received his new rank from IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi on Wednesday. Madar's promotion follows a long military career, significantly marked by his actions on October 7, 2023. While on vacation, Madar heard about the Hamas infiltration into southern Israel and immediately went to the front lines, dressed in civilian clothes and armed with only a handgun.

He drove towards the Re'im area and simultaneously worked to mobilize the battalion he commanded. During the fighting, he joined forces with Sergeant Major Ran Guili, whom he had not previously known. Together, they fought terrorists, rescued civilians, and aided the wounded. Madar himself was seriously wounded in the battle. Initially, forces arriving at his location did not recognize him as an IDF officer due to his civilian attire and personal weapon, but his tzitzit (ritual fringes) helped identify him and prevent friendly fire.

During the promotion ceremony, Chief of Staff Halevi directly addressed the events of October 7 and Madar's subsequent journey. Halevi recalled Madar fighting alongside Guili and noted Madar's severe injury and long recovery. He also highlighted Madar's continued efforts regarding Guili's fate and repatriation efforts. Itzik Guili, Ran's father, was present at the ceremony.

Madar, married to Sapir and a father of five, has served in the IDF for many years. He spent most of his service in the Givati Brigade and later commanded the Desert Reconnaissance Battalion 585. With his new rank, he will begin a new chapter as commander of the Yoav Brigade.
