New Ultra-Orthodox Party Considers Left-Leaning Academic for Top Spot

Moti Laytner, chairman of the new ultra-Orthodox party 'The Religious Public,' is reportedly considering Dr. Nehumi Yaffe for the second position on his party's list. Yaffe, currently affiliated with Harvard University, is traveling to Israel to discuss the offer.

This potential appointment has raised questions about the party's political identity, as Yaffe openly identifies as a "leftist" and "religious person." In past interviews, she has stated that she only understood her views were considered left-wing upon entering university. She has also been described as a key figure in the "Faithful Left," a movement of religious leftists in Israel.

Yaffe's political stances were further highlighted in her views on the ongoing conflict. She suggested that Israel should have considered an offer that included a ceasefire and the return of hostages, arguing that continuing the war leads to Israeli deaths and the killing of others. She indicated that rejecting such a genuine offer would warrant significant criticism against Israel.

The potential inclusion of Yaffe, who openly aligns with the left and holds views considered unconventional within the Haredi political sphere, marks a significant political direction for Laytner's party. Neither Laytner nor Yaffe have yet commented on the reported negotiations.
