TV Host Praises New Ultra-Orthodox Politician in Soft Interview

Ultra-Orthodox politician Moti Leitner, chairman of the newly formed "The Ultra-Orthodox Public" party, received a notably favorable interview on Channel 13's program "Moriyah and Berkobič." Host Eyal Berkobič praised Leitner, stating, "Dear ultra-Orthodox man, I had small talk with him, I wish all ultra-Orthodox people were like him." The party's official website highlighted the interview, presenting it alongside other recent media appearances by Leitner.

Leitner's party, launched recently, aims to offer an alternative to established ultra-Orthodox parties like Shas and United Torah Judaism. Leitner, who also serves as Deputy Mayor of Beit Shemesh, positions himself as a representative for working ultra-Orthodox individuals and communities he believes are underserved by current parties. The party officially launched in Beit Shemesh about a week prior to the interview.

Leitner's platform includes stances that differ from the traditional ultra-Orthodox leadership. At his party's launch, he criticized Shas and United Torah Judaism, advocating for the inclusion of mathematics and English in the ultra-Orthodox education system. He proposed that while Torah scholars would receive full protection, those not studying Torah would be required to serve in the military, even suggesting the establishment of an ultra-Orthodox brigade within the IDF.

"The Ultra-Orthodox Public" initially sought to join existing ultra-Orthodox slates, reportedly requesting representation in Shas and United Torah Judaism in July. After these negotiations failed to progress, the party decided to run independently.
