Eilat's Coral Reefs Disturbed by Nighttime Light Pollution
Coral reefs in Eilat, a vital natural treasure, are facing a new threat beyond rising sea temperatures: artificial light pollution from the city at night. These reefs, known for their unique resilience to warming seas, are crucial ecosystems supporting diverse marine life. Researchers have discovered that the corals, like humans, require darkness to rest and function properly.
A new study by researchers from the Hebrew University and the University of Illinois utilized a unique, multi-year monitoring system in Eilat to observe coral colonies. By analyzing subtle fluctuations in light emission from symbiotic algae within the coral tissues, a measure of their health, the team found that nighttime "noise" or light disturbances were significantly higher than during the day. This was unexpected, as photosynthesis, the process by which algae provide energy to the coral, primarily occurs during daylight hours.
The research revealed that even brief, low-intensity light exposure at night causes a prolonged and disruptive response in the coral's energy system. This suggests that artificial lights from beachfront establishments or boats, previously considered harmless, are significantly impacting the corals' ability to rest and recover. The corals' energy mechanisms remain highly sensitive and agitated in darkness, akin to a hyper-alert alarm system.
While further research is needed to fully understand the long-term consequences, the findings highlight a clear need for action. The study proposes simple, cost-effective solutions such as reducing light intensity, altering light angles, and implementing smart lighting strategies along Eilat's coastline. These measures could allow the corals to achieve the necessary rest, safeguarding this national treasure.
