A late-night incident in central Jerusalem on Monday night ended with the release of several American yeshiva students who had been arrested on Pines Street. Police had been called to the area after reports of disorder and noise, and during the response they detained several yeshiva students who were U.S. citizens.
The detainees were taken to a police station, where police asked the court to extend the detention of two of them by five days. The court rejected that request and ordered the immediate release of all the arrested students.
The episode triggered swift intervention by activist Simon Shisha, who worked to secure their release, while attorney Idan Gamlieli represented the detainees and presented detailed legal arguments to the court. Their combined effort led the judge to deny the police request.
Even after the ruling, police sought to delay the release of one of the students. According to the report, allegations of violence during the original arrest were at the center of the hearing.
