Ultra-Orthodox Protesters Disrupt Jerusalem, Target Police Official
Dozens of ultra-Orthodox protesters demonstrated outside the Jerusalem home of Police Commissioner Chaim Shemueli, head of the Traffic Division, on Wednesday evening. The protest, held in the Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood, was against the arrest of draft-dodging ultra-Orthodox men. Protesters attempted to breach the perimeter of Shemueli's residence from multiple directions, but were blocked by a large police presence.
The demonstration was eventually dispersed. Simultaneously, other protesters blocked the light rail in the Shvetei Israel area, chanting slogans against military conscription. The protests highlight ongoing tensions surrounding the mandatory military service for ultra-Orthodox men in Israel.
