Herzog on CNN: Gaza Needs Major Change, Hamas Must Be Disarmed

President Isaac Herzog stated in a CNN interview that Gaza must undergo significant change and Hamas must be disarmed. He highlighted the recent dramatic arrest of Hamas intelligence chief Muin al-Arbid within Gaza as a crucial step towards achieving these goals. Herzog explained that al-Arbid and his operatives were actively working to prevent Hamas's removal from power in Gaza and its disarmament.

According to Herzog, al-Arbid was specifically involved in efforts to thwart the establishment of a technocratic government in Gaza and was responsible for the conditions under which hostages were held in tunnels. "Gaza must undergo significant change," Herzog reiterated, emphasizing the objective of advancing to the next stage while countering those seeking to disrupt the disarmament of Hamas. He expressed hope for a tangible future for Gaza after the upcoming Israeli elections, which he believes will require the cooperation of all relevant parties to ensure a better future for both Gazan and Israeli children.

Addressing the Israeli elections, Herzog stressed the importance of the democratic process and urged external actors to respect the Israeli public's decisions. He described the election period as part of a "purification" process for Israeli society following the October 7th attacks, the return of hostages, and battlefield achievements, calling it a period of deep introspection and public discourse about Israel's future direction.

Herzog also commented on violence perpetrated by Israeli youth in the West Bank, stating that authorities are actively working to thwart such activities, arrest those responsible, and bring them to justice. He noted that approximately 10 to 12 suspects were arrested recently. While acknowledging U.S. Ambassador Mike Harkey's concerns about this violence, Herzog urged putting the phenomenon in perspective, comparing it to how the U.S. deals with urban violence. He called the perpetrators "a stain on the face of Israel" but affirmed the legal rights of any arrested individual in a democratic, law-abiding state.
