Herzog Links Hamas Official's Arrest to Hostage Handling, Gaza Future

President Isaac Herzog stated in a CNN interview that the recent arrest of senior Hamas official Muein al-Arbid is a "very important step" towards achieving Israel's goals. Herzog asserted that al-Arbid was responsible for thwarting efforts to establish a technocratic government in Gaza, remove Hamas from power, and disarm the organization. Crucially, Herzog also directly linked al-Arbid to the specific conditions under which hostages were held in tunnels.

Regarding the future of the Gaza Strip, Herzog emphasized the need for "significant change," outlining Israel's dual approach of advancing the next phase of operations while countering efforts to disrupt Hamas's disarmament. He expressed hope for a "real horizon" in Gaza after the upcoming Israeli elections, requiring a collective effort to offer a better future for both Israeli and Gazan children.

Addressing the ongoing Israeli election campaign, Herzog described it as a "purification process" for Israeli society following the October 7th attacks, expressing pride in the democratic procedure despite its challenges. He urged international leaders and opinion shapers to respect Israel's democratic process and allow its citizens to make their decisions, anticipating a high voter turnout.

On the issue of violence perpetrated by extremists in the West Bank, Herzog acknowledged the involvement of "young criminals" and detailed state efforts to apprehend those responsible, noting the recent arrest of 10 to 12 individuals. He supported U.S. Ambassador Mike Hackaby's stance on the violence, drawing a parallel to how the U.S. addresses similar issues in its cities. Herzog expressed confidence in the effectiveness of measures taken with the Shin Bet and other agencies, while also condemning the perpetrators as a "stain on Israel's face" and affirming the legal rights of those arrested.
