Hebrew Language Academy Corrects Common Pronunciation of 'Helmet'
The Academy of the Hebrew Language has issued a correction regarding the proper pronunciation of the word for 'helmet' in Hebrew. In a recent post, the Academy clarified that the plural form of the word, 'קסדה' (ksida), should be pronounced 'קסדות' (ksadot), with a shva vowel under the 'kuf' (ק), not a patach (a). This pronunciation follows the pattern of other Hebrew words with a similar grammatical structure, such as 'ילדה' (yaldah) becoming 'ילדות' (yalddot) and 'דרגה' (dargah) becoming 'דרגות' (dargot).
The Academy further explained that when the word is used in a construct state (smichut), such as 'קסדות אופניים' (ksadot ofanayim - bicycle helmets), the patach vowel returns to the root letter 'kuf'. This linguistic guidance aims to standardize and improve the use of Hebrew among its speakers, particularly concerning a word commonly used by cyclists and motorcyclists.
