Israel Acknowledges Role in 2008 Assassination of Syrian Nuclear Architect

Israel has officially admitted for the first time that its elite naval commandos, Shayetet 13, assassinated Syrian General Mohammed Suleiman in August 2008. Suleiman, a close confidant of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was described as the architect of Syria's nuclear reactor program, which was built in cooperation with North Korea and destroyed by Israel in 2007. He also served as a key conduit for advanced weapons transfers from Iran and Damascus to Hezbollah.

The operation took place on August 1, 2008, in the coastal town of Tartus. According to details revealed by former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, commandos emerged from the sea under the cover of darkness and approached within 150 meters of Suleiman's villa balcony. While he was dining with guests, snipers fired three precise shots, killing him instantly.

The commandos then retreated by sea, leaving no trace. The assassination caused shock in Damascus, but Assad remained publicly silent. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah later blamed Israel, citing Suleiman's role in the Second Lebanon War.

Initial confirmation of Israeli involvement emerged in 2015 from leaked NSA documents. This latest admission, following Olmert's revelations and security sources, definitively ends years of speculation surrounding the elimination of the Syrian general, who managed the regime's most sensitive military projects.
