Israel Admits 2008 Assassination of Assad's Top Nuclear and Weapons Advisor

Israel has officially claimed responsibility for the 2008 assassination of General Muhammad Suleiman, identified as a close confidant and the most senior security advisor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The operation took place in the Mediterranean coastal resort town of Tartus, where Suleiman was reportedly on his summer villa's balcony. Naval commandos arrived by sea, fired at close range, and disappeared without a trace, leaving the Damascus regime in shock.

Suleiman wielded extensive authority and was a central figure in Syria's military buildup, overseeing the regime's most classified projects. He led the development of the nuclear reactor in Deir ez-Zor, which was destroyed by the Israeli Air Force in 2007, and managed covert dealings with North Korea. He also served as the primary liaison for transferring advanced weapons, missiles, and "game-changing" weaponry from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Furthermore, Suleiman commanded the Syrian army's secret weapons development and procurement branch and managed the vast defense budgets of the presidential palace. His assassination occurred 18 years after the event, with Israel now formally acknowledging its role in the targeted killing.
