Pedestrian Fatality Makes 300th Road Death This Year in Israel

An 80-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run incident in northern Tel Aviv on Wednesday, marking the 300th road fatality in Israel since the beginning of the year. Police traffic accident investigators arrived at the scene on Bnei Ephraim Street and began investigating. The victim was evacuated in serious condition to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police located and arrested an 80-year-old male driver suspected of being involved in the accident and fleeing the scene shortly thereafter.

Earlier on Wednesday, a 50-year-old cyclist was seriously injured near the Barakat Junction, close to the city of Shoham. MDA (Magen David Adom) emergency medical teams evacuated him to Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, with facial injuries.

On Tuesday, a 40-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured by a vehicle in Kiryat Bialik, on the Acre-Haifa road. He was evacuated by MDA to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa with multiple systemic injuries.

According to the Or Yarok (Green Light) Association, 300 people have died in road accidents since the start of 2026, a 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Adv. Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of the association, stated that the 300 deaths represent a "major failure" of the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety. He added that Israel had set a goal to be below 300 road deaths annually by 2015, noting that this target was missed over a decade ago. Yaakov called for the next government to prioritize saving lives on the roads and to approve a multi-year national plan to reduce fatalities.
